Inside The Kenneth:
Creating a Calm, Warm and Effortlessly Layered Home
A Softened Colour Palette That Feels Like Home
The existing interior of The Kenneth leaned heavily into black, white and grey tones. While timeless, this palette can sometimes feel stark without careful styling.
“The home was very black, white and grey, so we wanted to gently soften that.”
To introduce warmth, subtle yet impactful colour choices were layered throughout the home. In the living area, rich nutmeg velvet was paired with deeper midnight tones to create contrast and depth. This warmth was then echoed in the dining space through thoughtfully chosen textiles, creating visual continuity.
The Power of
Texture and layering
With a restrained colour scheme, texture becomes the hero.
“With such a simple palette, bringing depth through fabric became the whole story.”
By layering linen, velvets, soft weaves, and natural finishes, each space feels rich and inviting rather than flat. This approach is key in contemporary interior styling - especially in homes where minimalism is a core design element.
Think:
- Soft linen bedding
- Plush velvet cushions
- Natural timber accents
- Layered textiles in complementary tones
These elements work together to create a tactile, lived-in feel that instantly elevates a space.
Designing with Intention
The Story Behind the Styling
Rather than imposing a strong design concept, the styling direction was guided by the home itself.
“The starting point was the home itself… we wanted to enhance that rather than compete with it.”
The overarching theme? Quiet luxury - a style that feels refined yet approachable.
From the moment you step inside, the intention is clear:
“We wanted it to feel like a family home you could walk into and instantly exhale… warm, inviting, and effortless without feeling overdone.”
This emotional connection is what transforms a house into a home.
Creating Cohesion While Letting Each Space Shine
One of the biggest challenges in open-plan homes is maintaining flow while giving each area its own identity.
“It was about making sure everything felt connected, but with each space having its own purpose.”
- The bedroom becomes a calm, cocooning retreat
- The living and dining areas are designed for connection and relaxation
- The kitchen acts as a central, functional hub
By subtly adjusting textures, scale, and styling details, each space feels distinct yet harmonious.

Choosing the Right Pieces for Every Room
Styling isn’t just about aesthetics — it’s about responding to the space.
“It came down to the spaces themselves.”
For example:
- Darker bedrooms benefit from layered, soft textures to create warmth
- Large open-plan areas need oversized cushions and statement pieces to balance scale
This tailored approach ensures every room feels considered and comfortable.
5 Expert Styling Tips to Create a Warm, Inviting Home
1. Invest in quality essentials
Beautiful bed linen and everyday textiles set the tone for your entire home.
2. Add greenery
Plants instantly bring life, softness, and a sense of calm.
3. Layer your lighting
Use table lamps, warm bulbs, and ambient lighting to transform the mood.
4. Embrace natural materials
Linen, timber, and textured fabrics add depth without overwhelming a space.
5. Style over time
“What makes a home feel truly considered is that it looks collected, not styled all at once.”
